Baoding Iron Ball

With a long history, Baoding iron ball, also known as handy exercise ball, is one of the traditional folk crafts in Baoding City of Hebei Province. It became popular in the folk only as a kind of playing device or self-protection equipment initially. Later it was appreciated by royal families and dignitaries. The iron ball is reputed as the first of "Three Treasures in Baoding " which also include noodle sauce and a vegetable named “Chunbulao”.

保定铁球，又名健身球，历史悠久。是河北保定传统的民间工艺品。最初只作为一种玩赏或护身器械在民间流传。后来供皇室贵族、达官显贵们赏玩。所谓“保定府三宗宝，铁球、面酱、春不老”，铁球是“保定三宝”之首。

Iron ball is the favorite sports equipment for Baoding people. They generally hold two balls by one hand in order to relax joints and muscles for maintaining health.

铁球是保定人十分喜爱的体育活动器材。一般用一只手托着两个铁球玩耍，以舒筋活络，强身健体。

The diameters of Baoding iron ball usually range from 4cm to 5cm. The ball shines bright with another inner ball. To use them for exercise, place two balls within the palm then rotate them clockwise and counterclockwise. Proved by clinical trials, playing Baoding iron ball can stimulate meridians (Jingluo in Chinese), strengthen bones and improve circulation of vital energy and blood in bodies. It is also beneficial to prevent some chronic diseases including numbness and trembling of hands, hypertension and hemiplegia. It is said that exercising of Baoding iron ball made a great contribution to the longevity of the Emperor Qianlong in the Qing Dynasty and a famous Chinese painter named Qi Baishi with the ages of 88 and 98 respectively.

保定铁球，直径一般4～5厘米，球体明光锃亮，球内有球。将双球置于手中，五指拨动，使之正转或逆转。经临床实验证明，玩健身球可以疏通经络，强筋健骨、调和气血，还可以防治手麻手抖、高血压、 半身不遂等慢性疾病。相传，乾隆皇帝活了88岁，著名画家齐白石长寿98 岁，他们之所以高寿，都得益于常练健身球。
